Air fresheners, plug-ins & candles
The EPA notes indoor VOC levels are typically higher than outdoor, and household products are a major source. Plug-ins and aerosol fresheners add synthetic fragrance to the air all day. And candles: burning paraffin releases VOCs like benzene and toluene plus fine soot, and synthetic candle "fragrance" often carries phthalates.
Look for instead: ventilation first. Run fewer scented products at once. If you love a candle, soy or beeswax burns cleaner than paraffin — use it in moderation with airflow. And favor disclosed ingredients over a mystery "fragrance."
How strong is the evidence? Solid on the air: EPA indoor-air guidance and measurement studies are real — including the uncomfortable finding that many "green" and essential-oil products aren't automatically clean-air either. This is about what you put into the air, not a claim about your body.
